Please don't judge this book by it's cover. And probably not even by it's title. This is neither a Lou Ferrigno stage-combat retrospective, nor an adolescent coming of age choose your own adventure novel. No, this book is very much an adult adventure through the eyes of awful creatures and vile intention. Make no mistake, Cold Counsel is like nothing you've ever read. Full stop. One part Norse backdrop, two parts fiendish perversion, a dash of "Wait, he can't take it THERE, can he? Whoa!, OK, we already there and blew right past!", and wrapped up in a wildly funny and dark, modern narrative. And what's more, the biting social commentary is as every present as the overall menace throughout. Established early on, the paranoia of being on the run is palpable, though gradually shifts into a steady state of ominousness and ill portent. It raises your anxiety page by page, but then expectations are quickly and unpleasantly destroyed. You can't un-read this book, so don't try. And by the way, whatever foolish expectations you thought you had are replaced with an even higher level of depravity. I love this book so much... thanks to Sharp for bringing that real talk and that real black comedy on top of an incredibly satisfying story. It's so refreshing to have monstrous characters behave in very, real rational ways. You inhabit the minds and fully developed psyches of bizarre creatures, but the motivations and behaviors match and are believable. OK, no more! Had to edit this three times! It's just too good to spoil. I hope you enjoy!

Cold Counsel Chris Sharp 9780765393296 Books Reviews

I am a big fantasy fan and I love Dungeons and Dragons. I was impressed from the reviews and liked the idea of reading something non traditional. This book does several things well

Main character is a troll - that is unique and pretty cool (FYI not a D&D type troll, more of a giant like troll)
He wields a bad ass axe
He has some cool goblin companions and interesting history
It isn't kiddie fantasy

However there some things that I felt were issues or weakened the story
The writing itself is okay, I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10, most professional authors are in the 8 range. There is a lot of telling in the story.
There are a lot of inconsistencies. One of the characters was there for the "fall of Rome" and yet you never get any other idea that this story took place on earth. Someone regularly uses a syringe (not invented until 1853) and the syringe is strong enough to punch through metal chest armor. In one scene there is a massive fire covering half the mountain and yet the character talks about how clear the night sky is (there would be smoke).
The goblins didn't really "feel" like goblins to me, they talked almost the same as humans would, they just seemed like mean humans.
Some of the characters are too powerful - if they are essentially 'all powerful' and ageless why are they in the situation they are in?
The timeline didn't make sense - one character lived for thousands of years but they way they tried to make a person a relative of that didn't make sense

Overall I liked the first 2/3 of the story and I was willing to overlook some more minor flaws because it was fun to see what Slud would do next. I didn't enjoy the last third of the story and the ending didn't make any sense to me and it was never explained either which was quite frustrating. I didn't find myself with much desire to read the subsequent story or an additional stories written after that.

I actually felt that this book would be more ideal for a younger audience (12-15) with the exception that F bombs are dropped regularly throughout the story and really increase in the last part, but the writing isn't quite good enough for a discerning adult fiction reader.

This book would go in the bottom quartile of most fantasy books I have read, it was tracing more middle of the road until the ending.
I went into this book knowing nothing of the author and very little about the actual story. All I knew was it was about a troll. Turns out picking it up was a great decision.

The world it took place in was related to Norse mythology which I am always a fan off. The only thing that threw me off for a little about the world was at one point it was mentioned that Rome had existed prior to the events of this story.

It took me a little while to get into the story due to the beginning being all about Slud. He is not the most interesting of characters I have encountered. As the story progresses we are introduced to a few alternate POV characters that I found to be much more engaging, my favorite of them being Neither-Nor.

I enjoyed this read and will definitely be picking up the next book in this series if there is one.
Cold Counsel is a wonderfully dark and fast-paced fantasy novel. The author does a magnificent job of anchoring the story to Norse mythology, (as seen through the eyes of the "bad guys" who still hold a grudge against the old gods), while we get to explore what came long after Ragnarok. From the first page Mr. Sharp takes us on a visceral thrill-ride that eschews the glossy veneer of other fantasy novels and gets right down to head-smashing and limb-cleaving in a very stark and brutal reality. While SLUD is without a doubt the star of the show, it is Mr. Sharp's ability to allow us to get inside all the character's heads (large and small) which gives the story great flavor and depth and kept me turning pages until the deliciously gory end. Here's hoping for more harsh winters in New England so we can get another installment in the adventures of SLUD of the Blood Claw clan!
