I could tell right away that Cecilia Spark is a character after my own heart. Instead of being into "girly" stuff like princesses, dolls and tea parties, Cecilia is all about adventure! She would much rather be out bug hunting or chasing dragons than sitting around painting her fingernails, which makes her my kind of heroine! It seems rare to find a book series where the main character is a strong girl with interests that fall outside of the female stereotype. While I enjoyed some girly pursuits growing up, I was always a "tomboy" who would rather be outside getting dirty than inside doing something domestic. This series will definitely appeal to girls who like adventure and fantasy.

I also really liked the elements of fantasy woven into the story and the creative names that the author bestowed on some of her characters. For instance the bad witch named Trixa, the dragon named Jinxi, the talking mouse named Soldier and the "Thingamabob" which turned out to be a good witch named Senorita Favorita. This book is full of creativity and imagination, aspects which are sure to delight young readers. The illustrations are simple black & white drawings, but they are very well-done and definitely add visual delight to the storyline. I would definitely recommend this book for grades K-3 (although kindergartners and first graders might still need some help reading it).

My children adored this book! I found it to be high quality fiction and wonderfully descriptive and imaginative. I am looking forward to buying other books from this author. The kids gave it two thumbs up and five stars!
Cecilia is a ten year old girl with a big imagination. With dragon cookies and juice in her backpack, Cecilia and her dog Flurry set off to the backyard on a bug hunting adventure, never guessing that instead of bugs, she would get captured by a wicked witch who owns a mean scary dragon. Who will save her?

Ngaire did a wonderful job of capturing the essence of an imaginary world and a little girl's big imagination.

This is a great book for kids, ages 9 to 12.
The adventures of Cecilia Sparks was truly fascinating.Cecilia heads out for an adventurous day not knowing that she's be captured by a witch and the witch didn't live alone. Nope this witch had a pet dragon named Jinxi. A talking mouse,which was created by a good witch who helps Cecilia along the way..There were Troglosauruses which were oddly shaped creatures who walked like penguins. So many different imaginable characters which brought this book to life and the illustration was beautiful. I truly enjoyed reading this book with my daughter. It was worth every penny!! Kudos, to this magnificent author!!

Cecilia, a ten year adventuress finds herself a friend while collaborating to escape and survive the many dangers of The Brimstone Forest.

I loved the references made in here to the snapdragons as it brings fond memories back of when my mom used to say "snapdragon" when she forgot something as I was growing up.

I loved the imagery presented by the author. The book was easy to read and I was easily able to relate to Cecilia!

This is a wonderful children's book which needs to grace the bookshelves in your home and read often to your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews alike!
Cecilia is a ten year old girl with a vivid imagination and a sense of adventure. She and her dog set out to catch butterflies. Soon they are captured by Trixia, the wicked witch of the Brimstone Forest. A fellow captive named Soldier mouse befriends her and helps them find a way to escape. They have many adventures together. Will Senorita Favorita, the good witch, be able to lead them safely out of the forest and back home? There are dragons lurking in the shadows, and Trixia has her pet dragon, Jinxi, hot on their trail. This chapter book, which I recommend for ages six and older, is an adventure story with likeable characters who experience a wide range of emotions on their journey. I believe that both boys and girls will love this book.
I think all children, age five through eight will love Cecilia's adventures. Most readers are children at heart, like me. This book was a lot of fun to read. The illustrations will bring children added joy and pleasure. They are adorable. I think there were just the right amount of pictures also.

The author used great names for all characters, places, and items. I also love how much of a tomboy Cecilia is. I was also a tomboy when I was young. I didn't go on any creepy crawly searches, but I especially like the encounter with the snapdragon plants. As a child, snapdragons were so much fun to play with.

I look forward to reading the next book, and will. Well done, Ngaire!

I am always looking for good books to share with my kids. With two different age levels and reading levels to contend with it isn't often that I find a book that will entertain both of them. This book did it! It was such an engaging story with well written characters that it held the attention of my older daughter but was simple enough that my younger reader could read it and felt accomplished that she read a chapter book! Just long enough and full of all kinds of adventure I couldn't give this book high enough praise with just the 5*!

Cecilia Spark likes bugs. She is an adventurer that takes to her back yard to discover what new species are crawling or flying around. But who knows what she may meet and discover when she herself is caught and flown to the Brimstone Forest! Witches, dragons even some pretty neat butterflies...all live in the Brimstone Forest and they are so cool, she just doesn't want to leave. Tricky part is, how does she get home when she wants to?

A great story for Young Readers of any age! I can't wait to see what Cecilia gets up to next!
